FAQ - Organic

  •  Kindly brief about the organic cashew market worldwide (the major producers and consumers).

Organic Cashews originate from India, Brazil, Sri Lanka and currently Vietnam also  is  reported  to be under development. The volumes are very small compared to conventional cashews. Major consumers are Europe and USA with small quantities  demanded from other countries.

  •  In your view, what is the current market share of organic cashews in cashew trade and what is the potential for growth in this sector?

The market share is less than 0.3% of conventional globally. The potential growth is 15 - 20 % compound annual growth if the value chain is addressed properly.

  • Which of India’s cashew importers (countries) hold good potential for organic cashews? Which do you consider as target countries for our organic cashews?

The CEPCI has done a study on US and Japan for organic cashews. The organic movement is gathering movement all over the world. The strong markets are in Europe and USA.

  •  What according to you would be the difference between cashews grown under organic and inorganic conditions in terms of kernel yield and quality of kernels?

There is hardly any difference in yield of seed or kernel in organic farming in conventional  orchards. Organic farming would be difficult with hybrids at the moment. The quality of organic cashews is a matter of perception and taste is a matter of opinion. The intrinsic quality of any organic produce is discernable. Organic movement had  no emphasis on quality and taste. This is changing slowly now with greater awareness and emphasis by the value chain.

  • Currently what is the price parity between organic and inorganic cashews?

Prices for Organic Cashews are significantly higher than conventional cashews. Organic handling requires that the producers are paid a fair price. This is compensated adequately by the value chain.  However, costs in handling organic produce are considerably higher than conventional produce.

  • Kindly brief about the procedures for getting organic cashew certification and which are the institutions involved in certifying the organic produce?

One can go through the National Programme on Organic Production document in India and understand the processes and procedures. There are international and national certifying agencies operating in India.

  • Given that most of our cashew growers rarely apply chemical fertilizers, pesticides or insecticides, what according to you is the scope for organic cashew production in India?

Mere non-application of prohibited items does not confer an organic status. The scope for organic cashew production has to be carefully handled and calibrated. This requires an integral approach, risk management and a thorough knowledge of the entire process.
